Exeter Centurions vs Devon Sharks
Exeter welcomed back their student contingent for a final fling in the last game of the 2007 season. Yet once again Exeter were caught cold in the early stages. In the first ten minutes of the game the away side blew the Centurions away as they went ahead 0 -12 up with tries from James Wood, Matt Goodman and Andy Smerdon. None of the tries were converted.
A promising move by the Centurions resulted in the ball being knocked forward from which Matt Goodman of the Sharks collected and linked up to set Andrew Murray free outside. The try was converted by Stu Kingsley.
Simon Dorey managed to break the line for the Centurions, scoring by the posts after a great midfield break. The try was converted to bring the score to 6-18. Just before half time the Sharks managed another score as they moved the ball quickly down the line to Joe Briggs, who used the overlap to go in the right corner.
Plymouth Titans vs Exeter Centurions
Exeter’s first game was away a Plymouth, when a team finding its feet in Rugby League took a 78-6 hiding. The last away game against the same opposition gives something of a marker as to our progress… but you’ll have to look beyond our 60-0 defeat to tell the true tale.
The most disappointing aspect of the game was travelling without a full squad, for the first time this season. A combination of injuries, work commitments, and perhaps the onset of the RU pre-season, whittled our squad down to its most threadbare. Many of our ‘big guns’ were missing… no Andy Matchett, no Nic Holt, no Max, Glen, Morgs or Chris Durman to add strength to the pack… no Albert, Darren Russell, Darren Light or Tim Bushell to add flair to the backs… m and it’s in that context that a brave performance should be seen.
Somerset Vikings vs Exeter Centurions
Exeter Centurions just came up short, going down 30-22 at Somerset Vikings II. The fourth defeat in a row leaves Exeter firmly rooted at the foot of the table, but this was still, perhaps, the Centurions’ best performance to date against a side containing several first team players, and led by West of England coach Chris Richards.
Exeter paid the price for some early handling errors, allowing the home team to run up a 12-0 lead simply from the pressure of continuous possession. Exeter had some attacking spells, but it took a piece of quick thinking from captain Brent Ryan just before the break to get the Centurions on the scoresheet. Ryan’s quick penalty caught the Vikings cold, and Nic Holt was able to link up to score.
Devon Sharks vs Exeter Centurions
Centurions picked a bad week to put in their worst display of the campaign. Other defeats have been heavier, but this score came against a team which we could and should have beaten.
Granted, there were mitigating circumstances – the self-proclaimed ‘worst pitch in England’ and a rain-sodden, windswept advert for ‘summer rugby’, not to mention a questionable refereeing performance – but the home side simply made fewer mistakes and well deserved their victory.
Exeter Centurions vs Plymouth Titans
Exeter Centurions went down to a heavy defeat at home to league leaders Plymouth Titans, but will still take great heart from the progress the team has made since the teams met in the season’s opener five weeks ago. The visitors, who took top spot by winning at Exmouth in midweek, were clear favourites from the outset against an Exeter team missing eight first choice players. Even so, the Plymouth coach Rob Stockwell, who is also the South of England representative coach, had nothing but praise for the improvements that Exeter have made in a short space of time.
